Dear PPL Community,
George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery. I am devastated by these horrific murders, by the systemic racism that continues to haunt and terrorize the Black community, by these grim and frightening confirmations of our country’s continued legacy of hate.
PPL stands in solidarity with our Black community and the Black Lives Matter movement. To our Black students, patrons, researchers, volunteers, staff, supporters, and friends — we see you, we hear you, we support you, we are listening. In these most difficult of times, we reaffirm our mission to stand against racism, oppression, and all forms of dehumanization.
I am a public librarian. And I became a public librarian because I believe public libraries are critical to democratizing education and opportunity in this country and around the world — especially for those people who are oppressed from opportunity. But we need to do better.
<p”>PPL is committed to doing the hard work of anti-racism. And we know that this work starts internally. We have postponed our #PPLGive Day by one week and we encourage you to consider supporting these local nonprofits doing racial justice work in Rhode Island. But this is not enough. We must and we will redouble our efforts to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in all areas of our organization, including in our Board and staff recruitment and hiring practices, our programming, and our partnerships.
The Library’s doors are open to everyone — we are a place where people can access the space, tools, and resources to learn together across differences. This is our strength. We will listen to our Black community members, we will learn together — we recommend these resources as a starting point — and we will act together to reject and overcome injustice, to democratize opportunity for all those who are oppressed from it, and to dismantle systemic racism.

George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery. Estoy devastado por los asesinatos horríficos, el racismo sistemático que continúa persiguiendo y aterrizando la comunidad negra, por las confirmaciones severas y espantosas del continuo legado de odio de nuestro país.
PPL se alinea en solidaridad con nuestra comunidad negra y el movimiento de Black Lives Matter (Las Vidas Negras Importan). Para nuestros estudiantes, mecenas, investigadores, voluntarios, trabajadores, apoyadores y amigos negros- los vemos, los oímos, los apoyamos, los estamos escuchando. En estos momentos de los más difíciles, reafirmamos nuestra misión de estar en contra del racismo, opresión y todas las formas de deshumanización.
Soy bibliotecario publico. Yo escogí ser bibliotecario publico porque creo que las bibliotecas publicas son esenciales para democratizar la educación y la oportunidad en nuestro país y alrededor del mundo- especialmente para ellos que son oprimimos de oportunidad. Pero, necesitamos hacer mejor.
PPL esta cometido a hacer el trabajo duro contra el racismo. Y sabemos que el trabajo necesita empezar de adentro. Hemos pospuesto nuestro Día de #PPLGive por una semana y los animamos a considerar a apoyar estas organizaciones locales sin animó de lucro haciendo trabajo de justicia racial en Rhode Island. Pero esto no es suficiente. Necesitamos y vamos a intensificar a lo doble nuestros esfuerzos a enfocarnos en la diversidad, equidad y inclusión en todas las áreas de nuestra organización, incluyendo nuestro reclutamiento y practicas de contratación de nuestra Junta y personal de trabajo, nuestra programación, y nuestras asociaciones.
Las puertas de la biblioteca están abiertas a todos. Somos un lugar donde las personas pueden tener acceso a espacio, herramientas, y recursos para aprender juntos a través de diferencias. Esto es nuestra fuerza. Vamos a escuchar a nuestros miembros de la comunidad negra, vamos a aprender juntos – vamos a recomendar estos recursos como un principio- y vamos a actuar juntos a rechazar y superar la injusticia, a democratizar la oportunidad para todos los que están oprimidos de ella, y vamos a desmantelar el sistema racista.
