Special Collections Resources for Other Librarians
Gathered together here some of the custom solutions we've developed for reading room access and collection storage. We hope they'll be useful to other special collections libraries (or anyone else interested). Please send comments, questions, or suggestions to special_collections@provlib.org. Enjoy!
Book cradles and supports are one of the most-used items in a special collections reading room, but the standard option has a couple issues: 1) They're expensive (nearly $500 for a medium set). 2) They take up a lot of space in the reading room or on a cart being taken to a class. 3) They are awkward to adjust for opening angle and spine width. 4) Over time (e.g. while a researcher is working with an item) the foam wedges tend to slide unless additional cushions are used. There are many other great custom support options on the market, but we developed ours to overcome these four drawbacks to the traditional wedges.
