Celebrate Hispanic Heritage @ the Library this Fall!
FREE Sunday Matinees Downtown beginning September 13
PROVIDENCE, RI – Providence Public Library is pleased to announce its reopening on Sundays with a Hispanic Heritage Celebration – FREE Sunday Matinees -- beginning Sunday, September 13
and continuing through October 25. All matinees will take place on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 – 4:00 pm in the Central Library’s Auditorium Theater (3rd floor), 150 Empire Street, which seats 300 and has a built-in screen and stereo sound.
The Library is accessible to individuals with disabilities. Please call our Facilities department in advance (M-F) for accommodation: (401) 455-8141. This film is a true story based on the novel by Julia Alvarez about three sisters who were in fierce opposition to the dictatorship of General Leonidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. They meet the dictator at a ball and he makes an unwelcome pass at Minerva, one of the sisters. After her embarrassing rejection of him, Minerva further jeopardizes herself by becoming a radical opponent the government and starts posting flyers against the stockpiling of guns. In 1960, the bodies of these sisters were found at the bottom of a cliff. The official report was that this was an accident.

Ofelia uses this fantasy world to deal with the real world filled with post-war Fascist repression.
