FREE Movie Mondays Continue at the Library this Summer
PROVIDENCE, RI – This summer…beat the heat (and the rain)! Watch a movie at the Library every Monday. All movies are shown in the Central Library’s Auditorium Theatre (3rd floor) at 150 Empire Street, Providence. (Venue is handicapped accessible; call ahead 455-8141 for accommodations.) Many of our movies are based on popular books that may be read and enjoyed by the whole family. If you liked the movie, check out the book this summer, too! We will also be featuring special movie nights for the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Details follow.
July 20 -- 1:30 pm: The Golden Compass
(Starring Nicole Kidman, Eva Green, Daniel Craig. New Line Cinema; Directed by Chris Weitz; Rated PG-13; 113 minutes; 2007)
Lyra Belacqua is an orphan who lives happily among the halls of Jordan College, Oxford. When Lyra overhears the professors discussing a mysterious substance called Dust, which is rumored to possess profound properties that could unite the whole universe, she heads off on an adventure that puts her in the company with clans, gyptians, and formidable armored bears in this fantasy adventure based on the best-selling, award-winning novel by Philip Pullman.

Join us for a special evening where The Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) will present a collection of international short movies that have delighted audiences in the past. This year’s Festival will take place August 4 – 9. Come see a sampling of what to expect from RIIFF – New England’s largest film festival and its only Academy Award qualifying event. July 27 -- 1:30 pm: Charlotte’s Web

This classic story based on the beloved book by E.B. White brings us the charming tale of Fern and her young pet pig Wilbur. Just as Wilbur learns of his impending fate on the chopping block, he meets a very special spider in the barn who begins to weave messages in her web such as “Some Pig,” “Radiant,” and “Terrific.” The messages make Wilbur famous and ultimately save his life in this story of friendship and loyalty.

Based on the timeless novel by C.S. Lewis, four London children are sent to a professor’s country home during World War II. They stumble into a magic wardrobe that leads to a mystical land called Narnia. Narnia is filled with amazing creatures, and the children soon join forces with the lion Aslan to fight the evil witch Jadis, who has cast an icy curse over the land.
August 10 -- 1:30 pm & 5:45 pm: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
(Starring Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell. Walt Disney Studios/Walden Media; Directed by Andrew Adamson. Rated PG; 174 minutes; 2008)
The four Pevensie children return to Narnia and discover that even though it has been only a short time in their world, hundreds of years have passed since they ruled there. With the help of a heroic mouse called Reepicheep and the exiled heir to the throne, Prince Caspian, they set out to overthrow the evil King Miraz, who has taken charge in this second installment of this epic.
August 17 -- 1:30 pm & 7:00 pm: Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3-D

Based on the novel by Jules Verne, this movie tells the tale of a radical scientist with a tarnished reputation who embarks on a quest to find out what happened to his missing brother. With the help of his nephew and their mountain guide, he discovers a fantastic, dangerous lost world in the center of the earth filled with bizarre landscapes and terrifying creatures.
August 24 -- 1:30 pm & 7:00 pm: The Spiderwick Chronicles
(Starring Freddie Highmore, Seth Rogan, Sarah Bolger; Paramount Pictures; Directed by Mark Waters; Rated PG; 97 minutes; 2008)
Based on the beloved, best-selling series of books by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, this fantasy-adventure film follows the Grave family after they’ve moved into the secluded house of their great, great Uncle Arthur Spiderwick. When strange accidents and disappearances start happening on a daily basis, they uncover the fantastic truth about the creatures that inhabit this peculiar estate.
August 31 -- Revisit your favorite Chocolate Factory with old and new movies based on this Roald Dahl classic!
1:30 pm: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

In this cult classic based on the novel by Roald Dahl, pure of heart Charlie Bucket, along with four grossly gluttonous girls and boys, win the opportunity to tour the magical candy factory of an eccentric recluse, Willy Wonka, and secure a lifetime supply of chocolate. One-by-one, the children are undone by their own greed until only Charlie is left to claim a prize even more fantastic than a lifetime of chocolate.

The magical mind of director Tim Burton takes us back inside the most famous chocolate factory in the world. This tour will be like no other and will change Charlie’s life forever.
