04/13/09 See History through a Gallery of Our Nation’s Art; on Exhibit at Wanskuck Branch Library through May 30
In an extension of National Art Month, Providence Public Library’s Wanskuck Branch, 233 Veazie Street, Providence, proudly presents Picturing America -- an exhibit of 40 works of art through May 30. The exhibit is made possible through We the People, the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) American History Program. Picturing America tells the story of America through its art. Our nation is united by our devotion to shared ideals. Great American art can help us ensure these ideals are studied, passed on, and remembered.
The art will be exhibited in two parts. The first 20 images will be on exhibit through April 30; the second 20 images will be exhibited through May 30. There will be brief explanations and discussions of each set of artwork at Wanskuck Branch Library as follows:
THURSDAY, APRIL 30 from 6:30 - 7:30 PM
THURSDAY, MAY 14 from 6:30 - 7:30 PM
A non-circulating resource book is available with more details on the works.
The NEH developed Picturing America as a tool to help teach American history and provide students with a gateway to the entire universe of the humanities. It features works by artists ranging from early American Indian artists to painters Mary Cassatt and Thomas Hart Benton; from photographers Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange to architects Frank Lloyd Wright and William Van Alen.
Picturing America is a project grant from (NEH) the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with (ALA) the American Library Association.
