Join us for a lively event with an award-winning author, poet, and playwright.
Colin Sargent is a playwright and author of three books of poetry. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he has been awarded the Maine Individual Artist Fellowship in Literature and earned a Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing. His screenplay Montebello Ice is under option at Gideon Films. A resident of Portland, Maine, Sargent is also the founding editor and publisher of award-winning Portland Magazine as well as a board member of the literacy organization Maine Reads.

About the Author
Cormac McCarthy is one of America’s most honored writers. He has won both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. His most recent novel, The Road, received the Pulitzer Prize.

By the Sweat of Our Brow, is a slideshow, discussion, and program of dramatic readings that document the life of the Longshoremen of ILA Local #1329(Providence and New Bedford). The diverse experiences of these men are poignant, humorous, sweet, and bitter. They recall the "old-timers" and the infamous "new regime." They wear their hard hats with pride, and "earned a good living" as they weathered unhealthy conditions and unjust deeds.
Presenter Sylvia Ann Soares, Brown '95, AEA, SAG, AFTRA, has toured nationally and abroad and has performed on television and in major regional theatres.

Sign-ups take place from 5:30-6pm via phone on the night of the event (call: 401-455-8057) OR from 6:00-7:00 pm in-person on the night of the event at the signup table. If you don't reach a live person via phone, you must sign up in-person. No advance sign-ups.

Holiday Mandolin Concert with L'Esperance

Celebrate the holidays with a performance of classical favorites.
Music will be led by Josh Bell of the Providence Mandolin Orchestra and will include Carol of the Bells, March of the Wooden Soldiers and Arabian Dance from The Nutcracker; Angels We Have Heard on High, and more. Background and commentary on the music and instruments will also be provided.
l'Esperance is a band of musicians of different backgrounds and ages who come together to enjoy the pleasure of making music with each other. Since 1994, l'Esperance has been sharing that joy with audiences around New England.
